Sofia Lucarelli
Inspired by the visual language of bumper stickers, ironwork, and tiling, Sofia Lucarelli’s (b.1994) work presents animals, objects, and icons in complex relationships with their environments. Horses, dogs, and vases pulled from placards and parks in Sicily and Mexico City are presented in profile against patterned grounds that reference churches, gates and fabrics. The delicately textured canvases, often marked by the thorny rosebush that loomed over her childhood, come to symbolize the tension between vulnerability and self-preservation, individuality and conformity, discipline and desire.
Lucarelli received her FD from Central Saint Martins, London, UK in 2013, and subsequently her BA from the London College of Communication, London, UK in 2016. Her work has been included in exhibitions at Fundación Maceta, Mexico City, MX (2024); JO-HS, Mexico City, MX (2023); and Studio Wright, Mexico City, MX (2023). Lucarelli lives and works in Mexico City, MX.
