Thérèse Mulgrew
Thérèse Mulgrew’s work explores questions of vulnerability and intimacy within the sphere of the dinner-party. Beginning with a carefully composed photograph of family and friends, or an intriguing object seen on the street, Mulgrew uses a deft photo-realistic hand to render noir-ish scenes where the uncertainty of budding connection is seen under a cinematic light. With lush stage-setting and a keen eye for symbolism, each work reveals a latent sense of spirituality beneath their alluring surfaces.
Mulgrew received her BA in English and Studio Art at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA (2013), and later studied at the New York Studio School, New York, NY (2018) and at The Art Students League of New York, New York, NY (2019). She has been the subject of solo exhibitions recently at Mey Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2023); Better Go South, Berline, DE (2023); Freight + Volume, New York, NY (2023); Dubuque Museum of Art, Dubuque, IA (2022); Simchowitz Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2022); and Studio Oh! Gallery, Chicago, IL (2021). Mulgrew currently lives and works in Chicago, IL.
